Movie Quote Cookies

Hi there! This week is spring break and we are busy having fun, so it is the perfect time to share with you my little adventure to Happy Hour Projects last week! Happy Hour Projects is one of my favorite about everything blogs, Adrianne does so many wonderful projects over there, stop by and visit her if you haven't before! Together we host fun holiday craft and recipe link parties together, be on the look out for another one when holidays approach! This month is a big month for Adrianne with her Script Frenzy challenge and since cookies are currently my favorite sweet to make, I decided to make cookies from 3 of Adrianne's all-time favorite movies, keeping with the script theme.
The quotes on the cookies above are from one of the movies. Keep reading to find out which one! These are made using a basic sugar cookie recipe and royal icing.

There are many different cut-out sugar cookie recipes out there. You can view my favorite cut-out cookie recipes on the Mrs. Fox's Sweets FAQ page. I like changing up the basic sugar cookie recipe using different flavorings. Once you have decided on a recipe, cut out, baked, and cooled your cookies you are ready to decorate. For the set of cookies that I am using for the quick tutorial below, I am using a glaze type icing, also found on my FAQ page.
To decorate the cookies you will need a few disposable piping bags, size 1 and size 2 tips, couplers, and I also like to have the covers to keep the icing from leaking on the table and to keep it from drying out.
Once the icing is in the bag, it needs to be closed off so that it doesn't leak out the other end. This can be done with a clip or rubber band.
Outline cookie with size 2 tip and let dry for about a half hour. This outline will prevent the inside icing from running off the sides when flooding in the next step. This glaze type icing is a little more difficult to to work with than royal icing and tends to spread out more, but it is also softer and taste better to me than royal icing.
Still using tip 2, fill in cookie being careful not to overflow the outline. These will need to dry for 8 to 12 hours before decorating with edible ink pens. Without using white coloring, the glaze icing is also a little translucent, but I thought it kinda worked here looking like parchment once it dried.
Once the cookies had dried, I used edible markers to write the quotes from...can you guess the movie?
Keep reading to find out what movie these are from!
These final cookies were made using royal icing. Since I outlined in black, I let the outline dry overnight to make sure that it wouldn't bleed. The next day I flooded the cookie with white, and later than evening piped the quotes on using tip 1. Can you name this movie?

These movies were all movies that Adrianne and I both grew up watching. I had a fun time with my daughter watching them all again before creating these cookies!
Movies from top to bottom: A Knight's Tale, The Princess Bride, and Labyrinth
Did you remember any of them?

Bunny Hop Cookies

Can you guess what it was that I used as inspiration for these cookies?
We will get to that in a moment, but first let me show you how I made them!
I started by outlining and flooding the chocolate cookies using a size 2 tip and blue cookie icing. I let these dry over night and then the next morning used an edible marker to draw on the bunnies. They aren't perfect, I don't have one of those cool projecting devices, so I gave it a shot free handed. I then outlined the bunnies with black royal icing and let that dry for about 8 hours. After that was dry I flooded with white royal icing, letting that dry over night before piping on the faces. Despite all of the drying time, the black icing still bled a little. I have really never had a problem with icings bleeding before and not sure why I did this time. I also had to fill in a few holes which tend to happen when piping in small spaces, but overall they turned out pretty good!
Have you figured out my inspiration yet?
Here it is! The button for the Bunny Hop Easter link party that I am hosting with Happy Hour Projects!
6 little bunnies hopping in a row waiting for you to join the Bunny Hop too!

Giant Chocolate Chip Valentine's Cookie

Happy Valentine's Day!
Here is a quickie! Really this is something that can be made at the last minute!
All that is needed is a package of chocolate chip cookie mix and the ingredients that go with it, red buttercream icing, heart sprinkles, and piping bag with tips 3, 17, and  22. The pan that I used is by Wilton sold exclusively at Target, there is a cut out heart in the center that I filled with Cherry M&M's.
Prepare cookie mix as directed on package.  The pan is already non-stick, but I spread a little Wilton Cake Release in the pan and around the center heart stem for good measure. Spread cookie dough in pan. The dough was quite sticky and I had to sprinkle a little flour on top of the dough to be able to flatten it better with my hands. I sprinkled the heart sprinkles on before baking. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 20 to 22 minutes. This cookie is 1-inch thick, so it needs the extra time. I let the cookie cool in the pan on a wire rack for a full hour before removing it from the pan. It could have probably been removed sooner, but I didn't want to risk cracking it.
For the borders and writing I used buttercream icing. If you don't want the mess or don't have time to make the buttercream, canned frosting with some additional confectioners' sugar (2 to 3 tablespoons) mixed in to thicken it up would work as well. The outer border is the reverse shell with tip 22, the inner is tip 17 reverse shell. If you are going to fill the center with candy, it is best to do that before piping around the center heart. I finished by writing "Happy Valentine's" with tip 3.

While you are visiting today, why don't you share your Valentine's Craft Projects at the "Share the Love" party that I am co-hosting with Happy Hour Projects!

Girly Cookies

These cookies were also made using the Wilton Girl 12-Cavity Non-Stick Cookie Pan, along with the Princess Castles & Tiaras Cookies. I used the Cookie Crazie Icing for these as well. I chose my icing for these cookies based on the texture and flavor which my family prefers!
Decorating these cookies with a flooding type icing is a little different than working on a regular flat surface cookie, you definitely don't want to overflow the cookies. I was in a bit of a rush, so these cookies had only dried about 2 hours before photographed. After 8 to 12 hours they would be slightly less shiny, but instead they were just gone! No one can resist the yumminess!
My favorite from the whole pan is the lips cookies, which would also be perfect for Valentine's Day!

Princess Castles & Tiaras Cookies

I have had these cookies baked a few days and I had planned on having these finished sooner. I guess later is better than never! This Girl 12-Cavity Non-Stick Cookie Pan by Wilton was something I just happened to find when gathering supplies for the Princess Castle Cake that I just made. The pan was on clearance for $5 so I couldn't resist it! Instead of cutting out the shapes, the dough is just pressed into the cavities.
The vote is also in, my children all prefer the shiny Icing Recipe from Cookie Crazie vs Royal Icing, so that is what I decided to use for these. I have to admit that I prefer the softer texture, the shine, and the flavor of it myself, but it is different to work with though. I find it is not as easy as royal icing, so royal icing is still my favorite to decorate with.
There are a total of 6 different designs in the pan, see the designs at Girly Cookies!

Shiny Heart Cookies

I just love things that sparkle! Okay, maybe these have more of a shine than sparkle, that's because they weren't made using my regular royal icing recipe, they were made using the Cookie Icing Recipe from Cookie Crazie! The recipe creates a softer than royal icing, yet still stackable cookie icing.
I have to admit, I did rush on these cookies. I only had an hour to decorate 32 cookies from start to finish, if I was ever going to get these done! Drying in between colors just wasn't an option. I used stripes, polka dots, and toothpick dragging for the swirl look. They were all made using They were made using tips 1 and 2.
After they were finished there was something so familiar. Apparently these 3 colors call to me, they are the same colors I used for my Christmas Tree Cookies and Snowflake Cookies last month, except for those were made using royal icing. Anyways.....
That's All Folks!

Blue Flame Cookies

These cookies are a bit trial run of a cookie celebrating the end of the gymnastics season. I wanted these cookies to look a little bit different, have a little more of a shine to them and thought this would be the perfect time to try the Cookie Crazing Cookie Icing Recipe. From even before I began blogging, I adored the amazing looking cookies from Cookie Crazie! This actually is the second time I have tried this recipe. I tried it once before on some Leftover Cookies, which I tried to pipe Easter Eggs on and it didn't turn out well. It was all my fault and my lack of knowledge. It was before I had a clue about outlining, flooding, waiting for colors to dry, and anything related to making cookies. I had icing pouring off the side, colors bleeding into colors, you name it, I was having a problem. I couldn't blame the recipe, I just didn't have a clue on decorating cookies with a flood type of icing.
This picture is before I added the pearl dust
This glaze type icing is easy to make, no mixer, just stirred it together by hand. It is a one consistency icing, outline and flood with the same consistency icing. I outlined the entire cookie, including the design and let them dry about a half hour before I began adding the colors. With each color in it's own section, I really didn't have to wait for one color to dry before moving on to the next, but I would have to wait to brush on the pearl dust and the words I intended to write. At this point I thought the cookies had turned out fine. I could have implemented the design a little better, but it looked okay. I left them overnight to dry. After drying overnight, light spots began to appear, which you can see on the picture before I added the pearl dust. This is a known problem using glaze type icings and I knew this before I started. I blame it on the drastic change in temperature and humidity overnight, since I didn't have this problem with the Leftover Cookies that I had made using this icing when the weather was more consistent and very warm.
The pearl dust did help to hide some of the splotches, but they are still a little visible.
The icing dries hard enough so that the cookies are stackable, yet the icing isn't as hard as royal icing, which is nice and leaves the entire cookie melt in your mouth soft! This is definitely an icing I will try to use again!

Gingerbread Men & Boys

Run, run as fast as you can...you can't catch me...I'm the Gingerbread Man!
Cookie decorating isn't really my thing, I love to eat them and look at them, but I am still practicing on the decorating part. Being fairly new to baking and decorating, I don't have a whole lot of cookie cutters, well I do, but I don't. I have quite a few older plastic cookie cutters, but I have found that I really like working with the metal cookie cutters better. This Christmas season I picked out 5 new cookie cutters and have been working on making cookies with all of them! This Gingerbread Man (the large one) is the 3rd that I have used, after the Snowman Family & Snowflake Cookies.
First when making cookies, you need a recipe. I have a sugar cookie recipe that I love, but not a gingerbread cookie recipe. Have you looked to see how many different Gingerbread Cookie Recipes are on the internet? A ton! I didn't have a problem picking my recipe at all. Instead of going by an ingredient list, the adorable little Gingerbread Heads by Bakerella sold me on this recipe! Visit Bakerella's Gingerbread Cookies for the recipe.
This was my first time making Gingerbread Men from scratch. The dough really didn't look appealing, and molasses stinks, but I continued on. This set of cookies has definitely been a challenge, my kitchen sink faucet quit working right as I went to turn it on the clean the mixer bowl after making this dough. By the time you are reading this I will have a gorgeous new one, but working in the kitchen with no kitchen sink faucet wasn't fun. This recipe does say to refrigerate several hours or overnight, and with how my day was going, I decided overnight would be better.
The next day I used 3 of the 4 refrigerated disks of gingerbread dough and froze the 4th. I rolled, I cut, I baked, and they cooled. I made both Gingerbread Men and Gingerbread Boys. I would have liked women and girls, but neither Michael's nor Target had a cookie cutter for a Gingerbread Lady and I didn't want to try and cut them myself. The cookies are decorated simply as a lot of Gingerbread Men are. They have a nice, yet mild gingerbread flavor, not as strong as store bought gingersnaps. I don't have a lot of experience eating gingerbread cookies, but  I think they taste delicious! I do like the recipe and will definitely use it again!
and then...
The Fox devoured the Gingerbread Man!
YUM!

Snowman Family & Snowflake Cookies

I love cut out cookies at Christmas! It has been a Christmas eve tradition in our family at Christmas for over 10 years, passed down by my husband's family. Since baking cut-out cookies was my husband's thing and I didn't have a clue, it was his job and the kids always helped cut out the cookies and decorating. Last year, my daughter Kaitlyn, baked and decorated the cookies all herself, you can see last years cookies at Flashback to Christmas 2010. Our Christmas Cookies in the past have only involved a few hours in the evening, decorating with sprinkles or frosting, now they have evolved some and I am baking more, but we will always continue to make the Christmas Eve cookies for Santa together! I am super excited about the cookie baking and have added 5 new cookie cutters to our collection that I can't wait to use!
Cut out cookies with royal icing, for me anyway, involve 2 days (we call them 2-day cookies), since they take awhile to bake, cool, decorate, dry, decorate some more, and dry completely. I have only used royal icing for decorating cookies a handful of times (these cookies make #6) and find it pretty much to be my nemesis. I just can't ever seem to get the outlines straight! Still, I love the look of cookies decorated with the royal icing and I will just keep trying for that perfect cookie!
I did get a little carried away with pink and made more PINK snowflakes than blue!
The boys always get the short end of the stick!
I personalized a snowman for each person in the family to enjoy!
It's nice to have a touch of snow when it is 76 degrees out in December and I am lovin' it! These snowman family and snowflake cookies are all the snow that I need!

Hello Kitty Cookies & Cookie Pops

Do you have a list? The list could be of anything you want to do. Well, I have a list that is just for baking, divided up into months and under each month I have listed what I want to do for that month. Some of the things can easily be carried over to the next month, but other things are for a particular occasion and must be done at a particular time. These Hello Kitty Cookie Pops are on that list and are something that I have wanted to make since spring and just keep carrying it over. I had them all planned in my head, bright pink with little pearls and the extra Wilton Hello Kitty Candies that I had bought at the same time I got the ones for my Hello Kitty Apples and Bananas Cupcakes that I had made back in April 2011. I couldn't put making these Hello Kitty Cookie Pops any longer! Besides, I have a little girl that loves Hello Kitty, and she has been asking for me for awhile to make something else Hello Kitty!
I do take my hat of to all of the "Cookie People" out there, the ones that are baking and decorating cookies to look like artwork almost daily and posting to their blogs. Y'all are amazing! Making cookies is a lot of work! I am not a "Cookie Person." They just take a long time! From making the dough, to rolling out the dough, to cutting out the cookies, then baking, cooling, making royal icing to the proper consistency, outlining, flooding, and waiting hours in between each color to dry! Hats off to you "Cookie People."
Anyway here I go, making cookies! I used the same recipe I always use: Martha Stewart's Essential Recipe No. 2: Sugar Cookies. For the cookies that I was putting a lollipop stick, I rolled a little thicker, thick enough to where the stick would not show through the cookie and the cookie would be stable. I baked the cookie with the stick right in it! I know not everyone wants to eat their cookie on a stick, but this is fun, especially for little ones! I made 6 cookies on sticks and had enough dough left for 8 regular 1/4 inch thick cut cookies.
I am only using one color of Royal Icing on this cookie to keep it simple. I halved the Wilton Royal Icing Recipe since I don't make cookies often and I didn't want to have too much icing left. I used 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1-1/2 tablespoons of meringue powder and about 4 tablespoons of warm water. This mixed on low in my stand mixer for exactly 10 minutes. I then colored the icing using Wilton Rose. With the icing at that consistency, I piped the outline on my cookies with a size 3 tip. After all of the cookies were outlined, I added 2-3 more tablespoons of water to the remaining icing to bring it to the consistency of shampoo. For the first time, instead of flooding the cookie using a piping bag, I used my squeeze bottle. I am not sure where I saw it done at, but on a "Cookie Person's" blog they had a picture of a bunch of squeeze bottles with all different colors of royal icing lined up on their counter. I really like this method, it works so much better than using a piping bag! It is easy just to put the lid on and take a few minute break without it drying out!
After each cookie was flooded, I immediately dropped the little candy pearls into place on the wet icing. As soon as all of the cookies were flooded, I went back to cookie #1 and glued on the Hello Kitty candy with the thick royal icing that I still had in the piping bag, gently sitting the candy on top of the cookie so I wouldn't mess up the icing. I did press the first one too hard and with the icing still wet and just crusted barely over, it messed up the icing a little.

Hello Kitty Chocolate Cookies

Hello, Kitty!
The latest buzz in bloggerville is chocolate cut out cookies and that really had me craving a change from regular sugar cookies! Not that I don't love regular sugar cookies, I do change them up with peppermint, coconut, almond, and of course vanilla extracts, but after reading about chocolate cut outs...that is what I long for!
I love the recipe I always use for regular sugar cookies, Martha Stewart's Essential Recipe No. 2: Sugar Cookies, so I just changed it to chocolate by changing the amount of all purpose flour from 3 to 2-1/2 cups and adding 1/2 cup cocoa powder. That's it! This recipe made 22 cookies, probably about 24 or 25 truthfully. The dough was yummy too and you can make little shapes out of it and trick the kids...oh yeah I did...haha!
The cookies came out perfect! They stayed true to size and taste GREAT!
So this is how far I got before I decided to take a picture. Pink bow...check. White outline...check. Flooding...almost done...check. After the cookies were all flooded I put them away for the night to dry.
I am still learning to decorate cookies and still need a lot of practice to make perfect! There are so many wonderful blogs out there for cookie decorating, so I try and absorb a little from each! I got some tips on decorating these cookies at Sweet Sugarbelle's. She has a push pin trick that helps with getting the eyes and nose in the right place! I have really learned a lot from her blog and she has a lot of pictorials to help.

  The Next Day
Pipe on the black bow outline, eyes, whiskers, and yellow nose. Let dry.
I am very pleased with how these turned out, probably my best looking cookies yet!
Packed and ready to go!
...and need I tell you what to do next...
EAT THEM! YUM!
They taste fabulous too!
My kids say the taste reminds them of a chocolate Pop-Tart...yep that's it...YUM!
Good-Bye, Kitty!
